PURPLE RONNIE’S STAND-UP POETRY CLUB

PHILL JUPITUS / DOCKERS MC

HOSTED BY LUKE WRIGHT

UDDERBELLY’S PASTURE (UNDERBELLY), 20 AUG, 11.45PM

Phill Jupitus returns to his roots in performance poetry at this Edinburgh launch of a series of stand up poetry nights, running this autumn in London at the Underbelly (no relation) Hoxton Square.  The monthly gigs programmed by Luke Wright are supported by Purple Ronnie, which also began life as a stage act twenty years ago by its creator, Giles Andreae.  To date it has sold 60 million greetings cards along with 2.5 million books.

Phill Jupitus began writing poetry when he worked at the DHSS.  Using the moniker 'Porky the Poet', he became associated with Anti-Fascist Action alongside fellow acts Kool Knotes, Swift Nick and Attila The Stockbroker.  He toured the student scene of colleges, universities and student unions supporting bands such as Billy Bragg, The Style Council and The Housemartins.

He was the Breakfast DJ on BBC 6 Music from 2002 to 2007. He has also worked on Radio 4 as a regular contributor to Loose Ends, The News Quiz, I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, Just A Minute and presented and wrote Disneyfied, a documentary on the work of Walt Disney.  He joined BBC Two's pop quiz Never Mind The Buzzcocks as a regular team captain originally alongside Sean Hughes and Mark Lamarr who also began their careers as performance poets. He also frequently appears on QI as a guest panelist.

4Talent award winner Luke Wright might just be the hardest working man in poetry. Since 2006 he’s launched his own curve-ball bid to become Poet Laureate, programmed and hosted Latitude’s poetry arena (the largest poetry event in Europe) and has become the newest poet-in-residence on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live. In 2009 he took contemporary poetry onto primetime TV, writing all the poetry for Channel 4’s The Seven Ages of Love, a 30 minute documentary that was broadcast to over a million people.  He has four solo poetry stage shows: Poet Laureate, Poet & Man, A Poet’s Work Is Never Done, and his current one - The Petty Concerns of Luke Wright plays at Underbelly at the Fringe 2009.

Dockers MC is a spoken word artist and illustrator from south London, "raised by a family where eccentricity is the second thing checked by the nurse". Verbally drowning the audience with a treasury of words, she feeds the audience monologues of characters she creates with her ability to absorb traits of people by face, voice and observation alone. She manages to collect pockets of words together to create a type of 'flo-etry' that makes your brain tap its feet and smile at the same time.

Purple Ronnie’s Stand Up Poetry Club will run Thursdays this autumn, on Sept 17th, Oct 15th, Nov 19th and Dec 17th 2009 at Underbelly, Hoxton Square, London: www.zigfrid.com.
